Everyone knows that  bantam chickens are not the world's best layers but they make adorable pets and fit into very small back-yards. And of course you do get the added advantage of yummy, fresh home-grown eggs, natural fertiliser for your gardens and lawn and your own pest control squad devotedly eating up all garden and lawn insect pests that might foolishly invade your back-yard.

  

Varieties usually available include the little soccer-ball style Pekins, fluffy models like Silkies, compact little partridge-coloured bantam Wyandottes, little dynamos like Sebrights and Old English Game crossbreeds. Yes - crossbreeds, these are often the prettiest colours of all!

Also available are laying hens like Lohmans or ISA browns (red hybrids of Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites), and hybrids of Australorps (black hens), and also Rhode Island Whites (white hens). These varieties are commercially bred for the highest possible output of eggs per annum. Quite simply - they are champion layers. These hens may not be cute little bantams (after all - they are working girls!) but they become very tame and friendly, they just really like people!

Got a broody hen but no rooster? Bantam Boutique can supply fertile eggs at $10 per clutch.
